The Starters

The Bees continue their three-game series with Cedar Rapids tonight and Burlington is on a roll. The Bees have allowed just three runs over the last three games with tremendous starting pitching from RHP Jose Macias, (7 IP, 0 ER, 5H on August 14 in Beloit); RHP Blake Hassebrock, (5 IP, 0ER, 6H on August 15 in Beloit); and RHP Jonathan Joseph, (7 IP, 0ER, 5H last night).

You hope the Bees are turning the corner with the starting pitching but with such a small sample size, it’s too early to tell. The Bees will look to make another step towards 500 as they look for their fourth straight win tonight.

Production Time…

What a week it’s been for guys just coming off the Disabled List. Today Bees OF Jose Crisotomo was named “Midwest League Player of the Week” for the week of August 8-14. He came off the Disabled List on August 9 and immediately went 12-for-24 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in six games played. He hit home runs on August 10 and 11th in Quad Cities and recorded four RBIs in each of those two games. Crisotomo logged single-game career highs for hits (4) and RBIs (4) in the game on August 11.

OF Jose Rivero was activated off the Disabled List on August 11 and immediately produced. He went 1-for-4 that night at Quad Cities with two RBIs and immediately produced two RBIs the next night. He is 4-for-15 in four games since coming off the Disabled List. Prior to coming off the Disabled List, Rivero’s last game action was on July 10 against Kane County.

Bowman pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on two hits for the “tough-luck” loss.

TODAY’S PITCHING MATCH-UP

Beloit Day One

In baseball, it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities when they are presented to you. The Burlington Bees scored three unearned runs in the eighth inning last night because of two fielding errors by the Quad Cities River Bandits en route to a 5-2 win. LF Jose Rivero had two RBIs, including an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. He has recorded three RBIs over the last two games since being activated from the Disabled List.

RHP Zack Thornton pitched three innings of relief to pick up the win. It is the eighth time in 2011 that he has pitched three or more innings in a single outing. OF Jose Crisotomo continued his hot hitting, going 1-4 with an RBI single in the second inning. He has recorded 10 RBIs over the last four games.

Crisotomo

OF Jose Crisotomo continued his torrid hitting last night. He is 8-14 since being activated off the Disabled List before Tuesday’s game against Clinton. He recorded four RBIs on both Wednesday and Thursday and set new career highs with three and four hits respectively over the last few nights. How often do you see a guy set two new career highs in as many nights?

That’s what we saw in Quad Cities with Crisotomo getting three and four hits respectively on both Wednesday and Thursday night.

Roster Move

The Bees look to get back on track as they play game two of their three-game series here in Quad Cities tonight. The Bees made a roster move before tonight’s game, activating OF Jose Rivero from the Disabled List and placing OF Douglas Landaeta on the Disabled List.

Last night was notable because of a few milestones for individual Bees players.

OF Jose Crisotomo recorded single game career highs of three hits and four RBIs. He hit a two-run single in the second inning, a solo home run in the seventh inning and an RBI single in the eighth inning. RHP Sean Murphy tied a career high with six strikeouts in his three innings pitched.

RHP Blake Hassebrock pitched two and two-thirds innings in the shortest outing of his season. LHP Max Peterson also issued five walks in his 2.1 innings pitched, the most walks in a single outing in his career.

Back On The Road…

The Bees showed extraordinary fight over the last two games of the Clinton series. On Monday the Bees tied the game not once, but twice with scores of 1-1 and 2-2 before the LumberKings scored three runs in the eighth inning to earn a 5-2 win.

Last night the Bees fought back from a 3-0 deficit and scored two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by 3B Tony Thompson. The Bees tied the game at 3 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by RF Jose Crisotomo. After the LumberKings pushed across a run in the sixth inning, the Bees tied the game on an opposite-field home run by Josh Whitaker. Thompson and Whitaker have combined for 29 of the 74 home runs hit by the Bees in 2011.

After a start to the second half that no one could expect, the Bees showed the same fight over the last two nights that led to their 45-25 record in the first half. Hopefully that fight can continue over the final 25 games of the season.
